Have you ever considered what it takes to “be”? Being alive is something we might take for granted. Many of us are blessed with clean water, plentiful food, nice homes, a simple co-pay to see a doctor…but for many, all of those are a luxury.
We’ve identified five basic needs (life, clean water, food, shelter, health) that every human being has. Kosmos was founded to share God’s love through the support of these causes that help people to “be”.
To be, you have to be alive. From conception to a natural death, life is a cause, to borrow a phrase “worth living for.” Around the world, the leading cause of death is not poor medical care, lack of water, lack of education, but the intentional ending of God given life. On the front end, its through abortion. On the back end, it’s through euthanasia. At Kosmos, we support those who are giving their lives to see that a culture of life thrives.
You can live without food for up to forty days, but without water, only about seven days. We need clean water to survive. Clean water is inaccessible to about 884 million people around the globe. Through organizations like Living Water, and through well drilling in places like Mozambique, Kosmos supports efforts to bring people water to drink, as well as the “living water” of Jesus Christ.
A person might live without food for up to six weeks. During economic downturns, even people in the US, in places like Katy, Texas can have a hard time affording food. Each week, as many as 140 families in Katy are helped through organizations like Katy Christian Ministries. Kosmos is committed to helping those who help feed the hungry.
War, poverty, famine, displacement…even foreclosure. All can leave people without shelter. We often dream of a “place to call home,” and yet some live without even a roof over their heads. Whether homeless in America, or a refugee in a war torn country, we desire help those who help shelter the homeless.
AIDS and malaria in Africa, child vaccinations in Texas. Each is a health issue, and a need to be met. Many organizations are working to be instruments of God by providing needed medical and dental care, life saving vaccinations, and even simple things that save lives like mosquito nets. Kosmos desires to provide needed dollars for those who meet health needs.
Everyone needs water, air, food, a safe place to live. But something else, a little less tangible, but so important is needed. Percy Bysshe Shelley said “Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for one second without hope.” At Kosmos, we support ministries that give hope to the hopeless, and comfort to the brokenhearted.
